SnB on Spring Break

I have been asked a question by a few friends of mine who check out my blog. They don’t leave comments, but because they know me personally, on occasion, they write emails and discuss some of my stories.

This week I got an email from two of them, wondering what the hell I was doing writing the Spring Break series. They went on to say that the story is so far from anything I ever wrote. To some extent, they are correct. But not totally.

When I write, the characters in my story have a weird way of getting into my head. Until the story is written, the characters haunt me, like they are begging to get out.

When I began the Spring Break series, I put myself into the casket, and I simply explained how it must have felt to be buried alive. The experience gave me nightmares afterwards, that is how real it was for me. In each installment of the story, I put myself into the main character’s place, and simply wrote about how they must have been feeling. Like Tiktok pointed out, most authors write this way.

At first, I didn’t plan on writing anything but the first part, but a comment from El Gaupo got me to thinking that I should continue, at least until the story ends. I have the entire story already planned, and I have already written many parts. I plan to post a new episode each day until I have told the entire story. Maybe then I can actually get to sleep at night. If anyone thinks I should continue with this tale, please feel free to leave comments. I hope you enjoy this series, I have never written anything like this before, and I am not sure whether I can write anything like this again.

  1. Sure, blame me… ;)
I’m reading all of the posted so far, in the category section so I can enjoy them as a longer piece.
Been skipping comments on the individual entries since the story really sucked me in.
The description of your process is fascinating to me. I wonder – did you start with a complete idea (beginning/midle/end) or just one part, and sork the rest out around that?

And I can see what you mean about nightmares – very well done, very chilling.

  2. {doesn’t everyone write this way? :) } Absolutely keep writing. Is this giving you nightmares? Before or after the plot made itself known to you? I dream about my characters, but not necessarily in context of the writing. They, apparently, have lives outside of the current story, which is just a glimpse…………

  3. Once the plot unfolded, it actually scared me that I could write anything of this genre. If you have read anything else that I have written, you will notice that the stories have been mainly autobiographical in nature. This is different. I have to finish the story to see where it is going. hope you enjoy it! As far as other writers writing this way, I don’t know how they write.

    • I guess I assume they do (if it’s not poetry or something) because otherwise how can it be good? Oh……… ya……… there are a lot of awful writers out there, lol. You are on the right track, of course. Imo, a writer *has* to get inside the character’s heads to be able to describe what’s actually happening.

And interestingly, I don’t like to read horror, and I despise horror movies. I do, however, as I’m learning, enjoy writing a little darker. I just try to make it so I don’t give myself nightmares. Hack and slash is not nearly as much fun as the mind bending stuff like this………… :D
